Chapter 18

They were all drowning in quiet. Zaden sat with his head resting on the back of his captain’s chair. Hara leaned against the far wall, her head held in her hand, her fingers disappearing into her hair. Lukas sat in a chair, looking sweaty and tired. The adrenaline from hunting down the Dragon Guard captain was beginning to wane and leave room for exhaustion. There was also a sense of disappointment in the air. Wyatt knew that Hara was upset at losing the bounty, and part of him couldn’t blame her. It sounded like a life-changing amount of Star Credits, and certainly there would have been a sense of prestige awarded by bringing home the head of one of the most wanted criminals in the galaxy. But, Wyatt couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief. He didn’t want to show it, but he couldn’t help a small smile crawl across his face. Hara hadn’t been the one that was confronted with a terrifying fate at the hand of that sicko. She didn’t have his fangs plunged into her wrist. She didn’t have her body wrenched from her, losing all control and becoming a mindless puppet, no matter how terrified she was.

The mere thought sent a shiver of pure dread down Wyatt’s spine.

But he’s dead. That’s it. I don’t have to have any more nightmares, or panic attacks. He’s not going to come back for me.

The thought blossomed inside of Wyatt. He was becoming overwhelmed with joy. So happy, that he felt himself start to tear up. He brought a hand through his hair and tried to stop the impending tears, but he was quickly failing. Zaden must have picked up on his sudden shift of emotions. His mate looked around from the captain’s chair and locked his gaze on Wyatt, who was standing against the wall, looking out the circular window at the stars that blurred past them. Wyatt didn’t notice Zaden get up from his chair and walk over to him. In fact, he was trying so hard to control the tears, he didn’t see Zaden until the big Traveler intertwined his strong fingers through Wyatt’s. The warmth and firm grip felt like home. Wyatt immediately felt every muscle in his body relax. His tears were pushed away as a smile spread across his face. He looked at Zaden with a slightly questioning look, but his question was answered as Zaden continued to walk, pulling Wyatt’s hand and drawing him next to him. They walked in silence past a disappointed Hara and kept going past the door that separated the main cabin from the rest of the ship. The hallway was narrow and had six doors, each leading to different areas of the ship. Zaden continued down the hall and led Wyatt to the last door at the very end. He pressed his keycard to the side, and the door hissed open, revealing a lavish captain’s quarters. There was a huge bed floating in the center of the dark room, with luxurious ivory white sheets and a mountain of pillows.
